We are delighted that you and your child are joining St James C of E Primary School this coming September.  On behalf of the Staff, Governors, children and parents, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you and your family to our school community.

We hope that the information on this page will answer many of the questions that you have about your child starting school with us in September. We will update this as more guidance is released and will be in touch as we know more.

Transition

We will be talking to pre-school and nursery settings, as we always do, to find out where your child is in their learning. We will also be talking to you directly to find out about your child's preferences; things they particularly enjoy, find difficult etc. These conversations usually take place within the context of a home visit in early September, however if this is not possible, due to the current situation, we will organise other ways of communicating with you.

The links below have some useful resources to support with transition.

Transition Targets

(Click on me)

We have thought of some goals to acheive before September. These will make sure your child in ready for Class R when they join us.

What will the school day look like?

In reception class we ensure that there is a smooth transition to starting school, we will adapt our timetable to the needs of the children in our class but our day would look something like this:

8.45am - Come into school (through reception's own entrance)

8.45am-9am - Put coats, bags, drinks etc. away and a settling down activity. This changes each day but might be puzzles, constructions, name writing or phonics games.

9am - Register

9-9.30am - Dough disco. Fine motor skills development using playdough and dancing.

9.30-10.15am - Independent learning. The children can choose their activity from our continuous provision in the classroom. During this time the teaching staff will work 1:1 with children.

10.15-10.30am - Milk and snack.

10.30-10.45am - Playtime.

10.45-11.15am - Independent learning.

11.15am - 11.35am - Phonics

11.45am - lunchtime

1-3pm - Independent learning. This will be based around the children's interests, it will include nursery rhyme and song time and PE throughout the week.

3pm - Story time.

3.15pm - Home time.

This is just an idea of what a day would look like, we would build up to this as the children become more settled and confident in their new environment. We ensure that we move at a pace that is right for the children in our class.

Breakfast and After School Club

We have our own on-site breakfast and after school club available. Breakfast club runs from 7.45am - 8.45am and after school club is available from 3.15-6pm.

If you would like to book your child in please contact admin@st-james.hereford.sch.uk.

EYFS

The Early Years is all about your child learning through play. Your child will spend most of their day in school accessing the continuous provision and following their own interests both indoors and outdoors. The areas within the classroom will be set up by adults who have taken into account your child's interests and next steps. The children will access these areas with support and guidance from teaching staff.

During the day, your child will take part in some short adult led activities focused around Communication and Language, Phonics and Maths. Although adult led, these will be fun and engaging sessions, planned with the children's interests and needs in mind.

We have both indoor and outdoor space in our classroom that our children can access all year round. Reception children also have the opportunity to attend Forest School sessions.

The document below sets out the early learning goals. These are what we will be working towards with your children.
